Alexander’s Annexe – Push Door To Exit

Alexander’s Annexe – Push Door To Exit

Released: Warp Records – CD only – WARP152

October 2006

Written and Produced by Alexander’s Annexe

Alexander’s Annexe is a collaboration between Mira Calix, David Sheppard (of the London Sinfonietta) and pianist Sarah Nicolls. The resulting project is captured here – a thirty minute long live recording which is minimal, extremely beautiful and highly unexpected. Initially commissioned by the Ravello Festival, Push Door To Exit comprises solely of a piano, the sounds from which are manipulated enabling the trio to interpret it in their natural musical languages.

As a direct result of the groundbreaking collaboration between the London Sinfonietta and Warp Records, Mira Calix, Sarah Nicolls and David Sheppard have come together to form the core of a new performing and writing group. Their professional experience encompasses a wide area of music bringing different approaches to the creative possibilities that contemporary instrumental techniques, live-electronic manipulation and compiled electronic sound can bring. Once formed, the group initially found support from the Britten-Pears Programme with an invitation to undertake a residency. This allowed the musicians to work in true collaboration exploring and developing every element of new ideas together, with individual space to speak through their own instruments. The resulting work, ‘Push Door To Exit’, was premiered at the 2005 and was subsequently released on Warp in November the following year. Past shows include appearances at MIT- Rome; Club Transmediale – Berlin; Electron – Geneva and Sonar – Barcelona.
