Inspired by a portrait of Catherine Parr, hanging in the Tudor Gallery at the National Portrait Gallery, Mira Calix has created a new surround sound installation. Catherine Parr was the only wife to survive King Henry VIII. Mira has set the text from a letter that Queen Catherine wrote to Henry while he was at war in France to music. The piece, titled I Desire No Commendation is sung by artist Sarah Lucas, who herself has 8 portraits in the lower gallery of the museum. The installation will be situated in the Tudor Gallery.
An Artists’ panel discussion hosted by Martyn Ware and Karen Pearson, with Brian Duffy, Sissel Tolaas and Mira Calix will take place at 7.30pm.
